[Review] Fantasy Maiden's Odd Hideout

Title:  Fantasy Maiden's Odd Hideout
Developer: Buriki Clock
Released: August 2014

Summary:

Ange and Bernd, two childhood friends, head out into the woods and enter a house made of delicious treats where they used to play at when they were little. After spending the night there, they find themselves locked inside. Then, suddenly fairies appear along with their dead childhood friend Cynthia! Cynthia tells Ange to collect breadcrumbs. Once she has enough, the bird in the cage will show her the way.

They spend each day partying and collecting breadcrumbs until reality starts to gradually become apparent and Bernd starts acting suspicious. The secret Bernd is hiding from her actually is...?!

Comments:

This game is one of those that are all cutesy and happy at the beginning, then horror and reality slowly comes in. Kinda like the game Patty and Mr. Miles except it actually gives you some closure.

The game is actually divided into 2 parts: one is Ange's side and the other is Bernd's side. Depending on how sensitive you are to feels, the heart-crushing moments start to come in right around the end of Ange's side.

So I was playing this game with my friend Toru... and we got stuck at the Poker mini-game cause we had so much fun gambling and buying Strawberry Jam from the Crow to raise Bernd-kouhai's affection level. xD

There are 3 endings, all of which are decided right near the end of Bernd's side. The true end is unlocked after seeing the bad end and the normal end.

A little tip if you've decided to play this game: Be sure to complete the puzzle picture in the first part, because you need it to see the true end a.k.a. Sunday End.

What to expect:
- Mini-quests
- Vampires
- Cute fairies
- Poker?! <--- Yes. You play poker in this game.
- Heart-crushing reality

What I Learned from RPGmaker Horror Games

1. There will always be a locked door.

2. Even if there's a knife or anything that could be used to stab and kill the antagonist, the protagonist will not pick it up and will use a less useful object instead.

3. There's almost always something useful in the library.

4. If there's an incinerator in the game, you will most likely use it to burn the antagonist, but you probably either have to do things to get it to work or go through a huge amount of trouble just to get to it.

5. In-game characters seem to have the habit of leaving notes filled with secrets for the protagonist to find.

6. When a statue or human-like object that used to be there suddenly disappears, it's probably gonna show up and chase you.

7. There's probably a secret passageway in the fireplace.

8. If it's a shiny object on the ground, it's probably useful.

9. It ain't a proper RPGmaker horror game without a chase scene.

10. When stuck, examine EVERYTHING... and save in between.

11. Being able to save the game anytime is a wonderful thing.

I'll add more to this if I think of other stuff. xD

[Review] Yanderella

Title: Yanderella
Developer: CHARON (Nekofuji Kaoru)
Site: http://nekocharon.web.fc2.com/
Genre: Eroge-styled Horror Adventure

Summary:

Yatarou, the main character, is a handsome hikikomori.
One day, he has a reunion with his former best friends Honoka and Hinata.
However, a warped love triangle lurks behind the happy days the three of them spend together.

Comments:

I really expected this to be the usual RPGmaker horror game with chase scenes and puzzle solving, but it turned out to be something near a visual novel dating game with some killer yandere girls. Pretty refreshing I must say.

What caught my attention for this game was the paint-esque art. I still don't know how to magically manipulate paint to create two moe anime girls, so I've come to appreciate the art style of this game. I find it hilarious that Yatarou's face doesn't change all throughout.

As far as I know, there are 3 endings: one where you don't get killed, one where Hinata goes cray-cray, and one where Honoka goes cray-cray. You unlock these by choosing whether you give the bear to any of them or keep it to yourself.

Despite this being lighter than the usual horror, there are still a bunch of things that scare me in this game. One moment it's all normal and lovey dovey then-- BOOM. Yandere horror comes in like a jump scare. The last scenes in the game were the best. The music that plays is just perfect (For Honoka's ending, a very familiar song plays). I enjoyed it too much. I still can't decide which ending is better/the lesser evil, but I'd have to say Hinata's was more brutal.

What to expect:
- Lots of choices, hilarious ones
- Story/Dialogue-heavy because it's like a VN
- Zero chase scenes (Ok, maybe there is one but you don't have to control the character)
- Dramatic lovey dovey music
- Dramatic yandere music
- Ero scenes?! (Not really.)

...Yanderella.

The most difficult choice in the game.

[Review] Stray Cat Crossing Demo

Title: Stray Cat Crossing
Developer: Jurlo & Jetpackgone
Released: 2014
Console: PC (RPGmaker)
Version: 0.2
Genre: Puzzle, Horror, Adventure

Summary:

While searching for a stray cat, the protagonist finds herself trapped in a mysterious red room, unable to leave until she solves the puzzles and riddles of a babyfaced figure.

Comments:

This game has really interesting graphics and animations. That's what caught my attention throughout the game. I love how it's all weird and bizarre. The sprites and animations looked like they were painstakingly made. They even included short animated video clips in there, some of them are jump scares. That creepy saw-like baby face too is a pretty cool concept. I'm also seeing a bunch of original concepts which is refreshing (cause I play too many RPGmaker horror games and so many things are already getting old).

Considering it's still the demo, there isn't much plot to it yet. I'm hoping for a good plot to accompany the attractive graphics and nice music. I'd love to play more of this game.

Recommended for:

- People who love carnival-like themes
- Those who don't want any chase scenes (This demo didn't have any)
- Those who just want to do puzzle solving

[Review] Alyssa

Title: Alyssa
Developer: Berri
Released: 2014
Genre: Horror, Puzzle

Note: This is the original version. They're currently working on a revamped version of the game. See updates here.

Summary:

Alyssa is a girl who lives in a mansion with her parents and two servants, William and Eleana. On her birthday, she decides to go for a picnic with her parents but they cancel, so she heads to their room to convince them and finds a demon there.

Comments:

Honestly, I have several complaints about the game, but don't let this stop you from playing. Overall, it's still enjoyable. Anyway, the save point is in an annoying place, where there are 2 demons walking around. (Thank goodness they fixed this in the revamped version) You'd be forced to dash every time you try to save and also after you save, which is annoying.

After playing several RPGmaker horror games some things start to get old and nothing feels new anymore, so if you're like me, you may feel a bit bored with the game. The puzzles are nothing new. Some of them you might have already encountered in other games. What does make this game worth playing is its mystery. (Though at some point in the game the plot is already pretty predictable... until you get to the ending and you're like wtf) What really happened?

The art in the game is alright. Alyssa turned out to be an adorable looking loli. The customized tiles look pretty good too. William looks like a girl though. As for the music, I'm hearing some familiar tunes there. Fits the atmosphere fine.

That painting on the right is your save point and heal.
Oh, and look what's guarding it!

Yeah. Little girl can blow up trees!

Seriously, I was expecting William to suddenly stop his goody-two-shoes act and reveal himself to be the mastermind. I mean, he's the person you'd least suspect. Didn't happen so... The WilliamxAlyssa ship lives!! (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:・゚✧ But then in the end---*gets shot for almost saying spoilers*

Ending Conditions

12/22/14: Ok, Apparently there's a third ending which allows you to access a bonus playroom after. Thanks to Dyoti for pointing this out.

Since I haven't gotten the last ending yet, here are the conditions for all endings taken from 4 cat's site which I translated to English.

END1

When the notebook is filled up, there's an item you have to obtain before following Coco. (If you have it, a cutscene will follow)

To obtain the item, you have to satisfy the two requirements below.
Condition 1: Put up a favorable impression when the little boy and two people are there.
Condition 2: Don't wreck Lyell's good spirits too much. (Restrain yourself from rude behavior and disregarding warnings.)

There's no need to walk around back and forth to obtain the item. Only, when you control Lyell, you cannot obtain the item between the time when he starts searching for "that room" and before you obtain the notebook.

END2

Follow Coco out the door while the notebook's pages are still incomplete. (When you collect all the pages, Lyell will say something to himself.)

END 3

Fulfilling the two requirements below is necessary:
Condition 1: Don't put up a favorable impression when the little boy and two people are there.
Condition 2: When Lyell has not yet read the memo on top of the table in the annex, end the game with the stuffed animals

Extra info for END3: To unlock the door inside the room with the stuffed animals, don't read the memo in the room where the boy hid. Read the 2 notebooks, one inside the pink room and another in the master's room.

[Review] フリーゲーム「bury」

Title: フリーゲーム「bury」
Genre: Horror, RPG
Developer: 4段目の猫 (4cat)
Playtime: 2-3 hours
Console: PC

Download

Bury is a game that has a lot of nursery rhyme references, so if you know your rhymes well, it will be an advantage for you in the game.

If you liked Ib or The Witch's House, you'll probably enjoy this game. It has similar puzzle solving stages where you meet strange characters like a cat with a fiddle, talking deer heads, and other talking inanimate objects. The game atmosphere and music really do remind me of Ib a lot. I love the music. It's very suitable for a riddle-solving exploration game.

As you progress through the game, the mystery behind the mansion deepens and you'll probably end up making theories as some stuff starts to become quite complicated.

Summary:

Coco loses her most treasured notebook.

"Perhaps it's in that place..."

"But that place is somewhere I definitely shouldn't go to, right?"

Relying on those words, Coco goes off to look for her notebook.

You play as this girl named Coco who goes inside a mansion to look for her missing notebook. When she steps inside, she sees a shadow and follows it. As she searches for the shadow, she starts to meet strange characters who ask her to solve riddles. Soon, she encounters a little boy and an older man who join her in her quest for her notebook. Could these two be a key to solving the mystery behind the strange mansion?

After playing several games like these,
it's not surprising anymore that inanimate objects are talking.

I've learned from every other RPGmaker game I've played
that red lips are dangerous. This one is no exception.

"Oh hey there, stranger! Let's go on an adventure together!
....Just don't suddenly stab me in the back."

[Review] Seven Mysteries

Title: Seven Mysteries
Genre: Horror
Developer: Sanggameboy (Le Hong Sang)
Original Language: Vietnamese
Translators: Greater Good 45 | Blurry Mind | Neku Sakuraba

The game's charm is in its story telling and how they based the stories on a set of fictional ghost stories from Kindaichi Case Files. It's what drew me in in the first place. You can search up some info on the Seven Mysteries of Fudo High so you can better appreciate the game if you're planning to play it.

I love how the stories all connect. That as you play each chapter, you get a better understanding of what exactly is going on because the stories narrated in each chapter are all happening simultaneously. There's also a huge twist in the end, which gives this game extra points.

Scariness factor? Well, with the dark school hallways which you explore with just a flashlight or candle and the creepy background music, will scare perhaps those not quite used to the horror game atmosphere yet. Based on my standards, it's far from scary and relies heavily on loud sounds and jump scares. Jump scares are important in horror games, but inducing fear without them and just letting fear creep into the player gradually is something I look for in a horror game. Yes. I want to be horribly disturbed.

My reaction to this game? I kept laughing for the first 3 chapters. And there's nothing that's meant to be funny in this game. I just found so many random things funny. When something is out of place or too exaggerated, that's when I start laughing. The chapters after that got me intrigued, cause it's where they start to reveal the truth and stuff.

Overall, this game isn't bad. It's like listening to a classmate telling you ghost stories and later finding out the gruesome secrets behind them, which is pretty enjoyable.

Summary:

1: Thirteen Steps

You play as Sang in this chapter. Sang and My are on night patrol, walking through the hallway with flashlights. At some point, they end up splitting up. Sang's flashlight runs out of battery. (Sucks for him.) Suddenly, he hears the sound of glass breaking. Thinking it's a prank pulled by My, he unlocks the classroom door and finds the window broken. He peers through the window and finds someone standing outside.
Goes looking for My to warn her and passes the stairs. He stops and remembers playing counting steps with "him", so he decides to count the steps. He's sure there are 12 steps, buuut... he ends up counting 13 steps in all. After he continues walking, My suddenly drops from the ceiling and went *splat* on the floor. (It was so random. I was just like... lalalala s'plorin'.... *SPLAT* WOAH LOLWTF.)

Am I a maniac for laughing at this scene?

2: The Music Room

This time, you control My. As she walks alone in hallway, the piano starts playing in music room, so she decides to go check it out. When she enters the room, the door closes and she's locked in. (Such typical horror game scenario) Suddenly, light flashes and bloody dead students are littering the room for a brief moment. My mutters, "It has started." (For a minute there, she sounded like a paranormal investigator who knew exactly what was happening.) Then, a notebook drops on the floor. And *poof* there's suddenly a rope ladder so she climbs that. As she goes through the mysterious attic place, she bumps into blonde haired glasses guy who screams as if he just saw a ghost and runs away. My continues walking, but falls through hole and dies.

3: The Chemistry Lab

You play as Loi for this chapter (who's the dude My bumped into.) He comments about how creepy the candles are so he should turn on the lights. WAIT. DUDE, LIKE WHY DIDN'T YOU TURN THEM ON IN THE FIRST PLACE? WHY ARE YOU WAITING IN A ROOM WITH LIT CANDLES ALL OVER THE PLACE? THAT'S PRETTY SHADY.

Anyway, so he flips the switch on but it doesn't turn on, so he decides to look for his other classmates and bumps into one of them, Mahn, at the door. He's happy... but then the guy hits him with a knife. lolwtf So Loi grabs a knife and fights him in the dark.

When he gets to the cafeteria, his other classmate Minh tries to kill him too. so he's desperate for light so he turns on the oven and it explodes. Loi gets thrown outside from the blast. THAT'S ONE SCARY OVEN. AND HOW IS THAT GUY STILL EVEN ALIVE AFTER BEING BLASTED THROUGH CONCRETE WALLS?!

EVEN THE OVEN IS TRYING TO KILL YOU.

Then he suddenly goes on "kill or be killed" mode and decides that he must kill everyone. He walks around the school grounds and finds a window where the shattered glass sound came from. He peers in and sees someone inside. (Note: Sang also peered through the window in chapter 1) Something appears behind Loi and pokes or pushes him, then disappears.

He heads inside and goes on a killing spree. (I had fun stabbing people in this part of the game. lol) Then, he wakes up in chem lab. IT WAS JUST A DREAM?! But he's holding a knife... so IT WAS REAL. Then Mahn enteres the room and complains about how he's taking too long. Mahn is alive?! They go to where everyone else (all of the people Loi stabbed earlier) was. They're still alive?! Loi becomes frightened and says, "Stay back!" He climbs up the rope ladder bumps into My who now looks deformed, so he screams and runs.

4: The Library

You play as Tuan this time. He's locked in the library. As he searches around, he finds a list of students who transferred. He wonders why a lot transfer every month. So, he continues to search the room and finds a pretty badly drawn map that indicates where the 4 treasures are. He goes "Well, if I'm going to be killed anyway, might as well enjoy treasure hunting." (Well, somewhere along those lines.) So he ends up finding a  rope, a calendar, a pen, and a diary.

(Note: The diary is the notebook that dropped when My was in the music room. Apparently, Tuan was hiding under the table the whole time. Aand, he was the one who broke the window in the classroom)

This soo reminds me of Ib.
Plus, the hallway music sounds like the same one from Ib too.

5: Good Morning

This chapter is narrated by student named Linh. Everything in this chapter is what's written in the diary. I'll leave this part as a surprise because it's what ties all the events together. It's best if you played it yourself.

6: The End...?

You control Tuan again and go check out that secret room mentioned in the diary. He gets locked in. Then weird stuff start happening once he tries to get the door opened. (I must admit. This scene was directed pretty well.) After the weird stuff, he leaves the room and follows a trail of red arrows. Once he enters the room they lead to, he relives the memories of Linh. His eye is hit by a stone and starts bleeding so he walks to the infirmary. (The surreal effect is cool and all but I hate how it's hard to tell where you're going or what you're examining.) He gets to the infirmary, grabs the first aid kit and heads to the library. After he uses it, he wakes up in the infirmary the day after (?). OR IS THIS ANOTHER ILLUSION? Well, he walks to the classroom and talks to Sang and My (WHY ARE YOU ALIVE?!) who tell him that there are illusions caused by paranormal activity that take place at night in the school and he's caught by it so he has to die in another's illusion so he won't die in real life. WHAT MADNESS IS THIS?! I DON'T TRUST YOU SANG. YOU KNOW TOO MUCH.

I STILL DON'T TRUST YOU, SANG!

Tuan tells Sang to meet him after class. When they meet, Tuan tells him that he knows how to break the curse. He asks Sang to lead him to a place with lots of mirrors. Once Tuan discovers the secret entrance, Sang pushes him in. TRAITOR!

This game has several different endings. This summary is based on my first play, in which I got a bad ending. lol

[Review] Toilet In Wonderland

Title: Toilet in Wonderland
Release Date: Jan 2010
Developer: Team Nonsense
Genre: Horror
Translator: Memories of Fear

Download Here

If you're up for strange and extremely weird games, I'd definitely recommend Toilet in Wonderland to you. If I had to describe this game in a single phrase it's "Yume Nikki on crack". Yes. It's as if the developer was high while making this game. Weirdness factor aside, I did enjoy playing it and getting killed by Mario.

You control this constipated girl with orange hair named Mira. The objective of the game is to find all toilets in the "Wonderland". You can reduce her constipation rate by collecting laxatives spread out in the world. As MJ puts it:

Seriously... what's he doing in that game?

The game also has this thing called "Actions" you can set like "Punch" and "Become Bald". When you set a certain action, the person or object you interact with might react differently or an event might happen. Personally, I like setting "Punch" and just punching everything I see because some things do end up exploding and leaving a pool of blood. In other cases, like Mr. Cow, he just starts shouting.

There's a cow blocking the way.

Most of the time, you'll be exploring and stopping and staring and digesting all the weirdness you encounter. On some portions (Well, this game IS categorized as a horror game) you WILL get chased.... like several times. Oh, and this game has one of the most annoying type of jumpscares too (If you've played The Witch's House, it's kinda like the jumpscares there where they come when your guard is down.)

At some point in the game, you'll just start to wonder what the point of the game is. However, if you've played Yume Nikki before, then you'll realize that you'll just have to keep exploring and collect everything to see if something really does happen.

Err... Who's this guy? O.o

I just made friends with a fire extinguisher!

Some Trivia: This game won 2nd place at the VIP RPG Red-and-White 2010 festival
