[Review] World End Economica Episode 1

World End Economica episode.1
Title: World End Economica I
Developer: Spicy Tails
Released: 2011
Voiced? No
Length: 10-30 hours

Download:

World End Economica is a visual novel written by the author of Spice and Wolf, Isuna Hasekura. It is released by episode. As of this moment, there are only 2 episodes released.

I'd highly recommend this for those who like slice of life and heartwarming stories. There's a bit of drama in it too, but it's the insightful kind.

Opening:

Plot Summary:
*Warning! Contains spoilers!*

The protagonist is Yoshiharu Kawaura, who was born and raised on the moon.
Yoshiharu goes to a cheap internet cafe, Big Bull Cafe, and looks at the Lunar Stock Exchange, which is how he primarily earns money because it doesn't require him to break a sweat. His goal is to earn enough money and live in the center of the lunar city, where most of the rich moon people live. Once he learns from the clerk that the police are on the way inside, he makes a quick escape to avoid getting caught. Law states that those below 18 years old had to be part of an educational institution. Since Yoshiharu is below 18, he has to avoid the police.

He decides to have lunch at the Lunar Chinese Restaurant instead since he can't go back to the internet cafe. He turns on his PC again to continue where he left off. The waitress there asks him a bunch of questions, which he found annoying. Just as he was about to have dessert, the police enter the restaurant and have lunch there. The waitress helps him escape, so he takes off and arrives in some sort of atrium.

A dark figure starts searching his bag. He tackles the figure and finds out that it was a black haired girl. She contacts someone, and the waitress from the restaurant arrives. A tracking device was apparently placed in his bag by the waitress, allowing them to find him. The waitress, who introduces herself as Lisa, invites him to stay with her, saying that it's her 'hobby' to take in lost kids like him. He agrees to go with her. The black haired girl, whose name is Hagana, complains about being unable to stand because he tackled her earlier, so Lisa forces Yoshiharu to give her a piggyback ride.

They arrive at what seems to be a church. He takes a bath for the first time since he ran away from home. After his bath, he finds Lisa reading a book. They talk about Earth, Lisa's hobby, books, and religion. There, he reveals his real name to Lisa. Their talk is interrupted by Hagana who suddenly appears in somewhat revealing clothes, making Lisa scold her.

The next day, he gets back to his usual activity of trading stocks. He does not reveal to Lisa what he does on the PC, but she doesn't seem to mind as long as it's not anything illegal. With Hagana busy, Yoshiharu and Lisa have dinner together without her. Lisa tells him that he has to work for his meals and lodging, so she mentions a bunch of jobs Yoshiharu can do. The earnings from those jobs are way less than what he usually makes when trading stocks, so he declines. He takes out 200 moules and gives it to Lisa as payment for staying 20 days. She looks baffled about how he produced the money. He assures her that it isn't 'dirty' money. She then decides not to inquire further.

Yoshiharu makes a visit to Newton City to boost up his spirit. When he returns to the church, he hears the troubled voice of Hagana. He runs to the kitchen, which is now a mess, and finds a man there with her. Yoshiharu takes down the man and restrains him, thinking he was a burglar. He soon realizes that the man is a debt collector, who is there to collect the 200 moule interest. He pays the man and lets him go. Hagana asks Yoshiharu to help fix the furniture and cover up the scene. She finds 2 lilies missing from the vase, so she asks him to find 2 lilies. He uproots lilies from a nearby area and teaches her how to cut the stems. Afterwards, he spends the rest of the time in his room reading the news and checking his e-mail. An e-mail about an investment contest comes in. He saves it in case he decides to join in the future.

Lisa arrives with leftovers from the Lunar Chinese Restaurant. During dinner, Lisa finds out about the debt collector's visit. Hagane kicks Yoshiharu under the table before he could disclose any details about how the room was a mess. After dinner, Lisa makes a visit to Yoshiharu's room and invites him to her room while Hagana is in the bath. She serves him some alcohol (whooahh... giving alcohol to minors, eh, Lisa?) and begins inquiring about the debt collector's visit. After learning about everything, she tells Yoshiharu about the debt.

Lisa borrowed a book from the library for Hagana. They lost it, so they're forced to pay the fee, which is pricey because books are rare. And that's how they ended up borrowing money from the debt collector, Mr. Toyama. Hagane thinks it's her fault, so she gets upset when Mr. Toyama visits to collect the interest. She even went as far as offering to sell herself, which Lisa strongly opposes. As Lisa continues talking, she suddenly gives Yoshiharu a hug, which surprises him.

The next day, it rains. Hagana and Yoshiharu end up arguing about their clothes, so Lisa suggests that they go shopping together after the rain stops. It's a dull day for the stock market, so Yoshiharu has nothing better to do. Seeing this, Lisa suggests they bake cookies, so she makes Yoshiharu do all the work while she gives him instructions. In the middle of that, the doorbell rings, so Yoshiharu goes to get the door and finds a girl with glasses named Chris delivering vegetables. She is there to ask help from Hagana on some math problems. Then, he gets the idea of using Hagana's skills to help him with his trading. However, he does not ask because of Hagana's attitude towards him.

Later that day, he goes shopping with Hagana. Yoshiharu learns more things about Hagana as they talk and connect a bit for once. After a failed prank on getting Hagana to try out clothes from a colorful clothing store, they enter a normal store selling cheap clothes. Hagana goes on super haggle mode, irritating the clerk and making Yoshiharu uncomfortable. They manage to score a discount and Hagana pays for it all. When asking for Yoshiharu's share, she subtracts the moules saved from the haggle from his share. Yoshiharu insists on paying in full because she was the one doing all the haggling while he did nothing, but Hagana refuses to let him. This leads to Hagana kicking him and taking off crying. When he gets back to church, Lisa asks him why Hagana is crying. He learns that it was Lisa who told her to haggle as thanks for his help. When he gets to his room, he decides to sign up for the investment contest.

The next day, Lisa asks Hagana and Yoshiharu to eat lunch together. When they do, he tries to apologize, but Hagana gets angry and reveals why she didn't like him: because everyone else is doing their best to survive, while he just spends the day in front of his computer and doesn't work. (She's just jealous that Yoshiharu puts in less effort and earns more money than her. lol) Yoshiharu heads to his room and begins thinking about his life. With all the dull market days, he is unsure about where he is going in trading. Additionally, there's Hagana adding to his stress too.

Right in the middle of Yoshiharu's mental struggle, the doorbell rings. It's Mr. Toyama who is looking for Lisa, saying he has something important to discuss. He waits in the living room for Lisa's return. He and Yoshiharu have a decent conversation, making Yoshiharu realize that he's not a bad guy. When Lisa returns, they leave the room to speak in private. Afterwards, Lisa comes back with a serious look on her face.

The next day is a day off for Yoshiharu, since the stock market is closed. He heads out to look for Chris and asks her what Hagana likes. Before she could answer properly, they see Hagana approaching, so Yoshiharu leaves before he is spotted. He goes back to the church. A while later, he receives a call from Lisa asking him to prepare hot cocoa and a bath. She gets back and he hears Hagana's door slamming shut. Lisa tells him that Mr. Toyama wants the debt paid back in full. Hagana caught wind of the situation and confronted Mr. Toyama, so Lisa stepped in to stop her and Hagana's elbow accidentally hit Lisa's eye. Yoshiharu decides to help Lisa through the investment contest so she doesn't have to sell her precious books, but he needed Hagana's help. They head to Hagana's room where she is curled up in the corner crying. Lisa gives her a hug and explains what they decided on. Right after that, Yoshiharu begins teaching Hagana about the stock market.

They also spend the next day teaching Hagana about stocks. In the middle of the lesson, they spot Chris at the window spying on them and blushing, probably misunderstanding something. She takes off once Yoshiharu catches sight of her. They continue with the lesson.

Once Hagana learns all she can, she mentions that they need a programmer to build them a program for their calculations. They pay a visit to Serrault, a friend of Lisa's who is a programmer. When they follow the directions of where his place is at, Yoshiharu finds out that Serrault is the afro guy from the Big Bull Cafe, the cheap internet cafe he always visits. Hagana describes the program they want him to make, and he accepts.

While the program is being constructed, Yoshiharu does all the trading. Hagana wants the program improved, so she asks Yoshiharu to accompany her to the Big Bull Cafe (cause afros scare her lol). When they get there, Yoshiharu opens the booth Serrault is in and finds him sleeping while leaving a porn video on. In panic, he tells Hagana to wait outside while he wakes Serrault up and pull the plug of the monitor. A clueless Hagana soon joins them. After doing their business, they start heading to the church, but Yoshiharu tells her to walk home alone because he wants to eat out. Hagana tells him she wants to join him. They decide to buy bread and eat at the tunnel, since Chris usually eats there too. Hagana has a hard time moving herself up the tunnel, so Yoshiharu carries her. (omg XD) They savor the amazing view together until Chris arrives.

Finally, they test out the program. When the prediction works, Hagana breathes a sigh of relief. They start relying on the program and slowly increase their rank in the contest. Yoshiharu decides to try out the program in the real market despite Hagana's pessimism about its efficiency. The program does work and soon people who also owe money to Mr. Toyama like Chris' family hear of what they're doing, so they entrust their savings to them to use for trading.

Right around that time, Yoshiharu gets scouted by Barton from The Brittanica. He meets up with Barton in Newton City without informing Lisa and Hagana of the details. Barton was impressed with his performance during the first few days of the contest. Yoshiharu learns more about trading from him as they dine together in an expensive restaurant.

As the days progresses, Hagana's program improves and they begin relying on it so much. Yoshiharu loses his passion for trading and feels useless. He feels he has to catch up with the program or he will be replaced. He decides to see Barton again. Barton teaches him about getting insider information, and other predictors of the rise or fall of businesses, He also mentions that Yoshiharu's trading style became stabilized and wonders if he was working with one more person, which he terms as a 'quaint'. Yoshiharu admits that he is working with Hagana. Barton then advises him to part with her, because the essence of trading lies not in mathematics.

Yoshiharu decides to aim for first place in the contest, so he can give the money to Hagana and cover her living expenses before she enters the university. That way, he won't have regrets when he leaves to join Barton. Set on getting first place, Hagana and Yoshiharu work hard on trading. They end up sleeping together on the bed for a few days. Hagana asks why he wants to aim for first place. He mentions his intention to leave and follow his dream, which was to become an investor in Newton City and fund an expedition for Mars. Hagana starts crying when he tells her the money from getting first place is for her.

During the last day of the contest, Yoshiharu makes an attempt to raise enough money to get to first place, but it fails. Hagana is disappointed, but Yoshiharu tells her that it was a fun journey anyway.
Suddenly, Mr. Toyama and Serrault show up. Mr. Toyama wants to entrust his money to them too. They explain that they only have one week to raise enough money to pay back the debts. So, Hagana and Yoshiharu get to work. However, things don't go well for them. There's not enough time for them to raise the money, so Yoshiharu asks Barton to invest in him, but his offer was declined. However, Barton gives him some 'insider info' about which stock to look out for.

Yoshiharu trusts Barton's hint, which causes them to lose all their money. Barton tricked him. Yoshiharu collapses and falls into a coma from the shock. He is hospitalized and wakes up 10 days later. Despite him losing all the money, Chris and those who entrusted their money to him still visit. Apparently, Barton stepped in and helped reduce everyone's debt to 50,000 moules, so they're safe for now. When Yoshiharu returns to the church in a wheelchair, they find out Hagana ran away. The game ends there.

Comments:

This game was a roller coaster ride of relief, tension, happiness, and sadness. I like games like these that don't follow the cliche plot where the protagonist endures hardship then wins it all in the end. Rather, what happened was the opposite. Choosing to end the story that way must have been done on purpose to make readers realize that what can't be severed by money are the strong bonds you make with people who care for you.

I was drawn into the story right around when Yoshiharu/Hal starts living with Lisa and Hagana. Lisa was an interesting character. She was like a mother or older sister figure who held with her the remnants and values of Earth culture. Honestly, I wanted to slap Hagana several times for being so judgmental at the beginning. Right around the second half of the story, she became more likable. I particularly admire her genuine desire to help people paired with her straightforwardness. She and Yoshiharu make a great pair.

And now for the not plot related things...

I love the music in this game. It definitely gives a 'moon' or space-like atmosphere to it. It sorta reminds me of Terraria music though. The background music was utilized pretty well when the scene was tense.

There were a lot of CGs in the game. Well, it is a pretty lengthy game. I love the one where Hagana and Yoshiharu are on top of the tunnel, savoring the view. It was just perfect for the scene.

Overall, this game is worth playing. You don't just get entertainment, but also added knowledge on stock market trading and insights on life! I can't wait to play the next episode.

[Review] Fantasy Maiden's Odd Hideout

Title:  Fantasy Maiden's Odd Hideout
Developer: Buriki Clock
Released: August 2014

Summary:

Ange and Bernd, two childhood friends, head out into the woods and enter a house made of delicious treats where they used to play at when they were little. After spending the night there, they find themselves locked inside. Then, suddenly fairies appear along with their dead childhood friend Cynthia! Cynthia tells Ange to collect breadcrumbs. Once she has enough, the bird in the cage will show her the way.

They spend each day partying and collecting breadcrumbs until reality starts to gradually become apparent and Bernd starts acting suspicious. The secret Bernd is hiding from her actually is...?!

Comments:

This game is one of those that are all cutesy and happy at the beginning, then horror and reality slowly comes in. Kinda like the game Patty and Mr. Miles except it actually gives you some closure.

The game is actually divided into 2 parts: one is Ange's side and the other is Bernd's side. Depending on how sensitive you are to feels, the heart-crushing moments start to come in right around the end of Ange's side.

So I was playing this game with my friend Toru... and we got stuck at the Poker mini-game cause we had so much fun gambling and buying Strawberry Jam from the Crow to raise Bernd-kouhai's affection level. xD

There are 3 endings, all of which are decided right near the end of Bernd's side. The true end is unlocked after seeing the bad end and the normal end.

A little tip if you've decided to play this game: Be sure to complete the puzzle picture in the first part, because you need it to see the true end a.k.a. Sunday End.

What to expect:
- Mini-quests
- Vampires
- Cute fairies
- Poker?! <--- Yes. You play poker in this game.
- Heart-crushing reality

[Review] Tobari and the Night of the Curious Moon

Title: Tobari and the Night of the Curious Moon
Developer: Desunoya
Genre: Fantasy, Platformer

Summary:

In this platformer, the heroine Tobari wields a Keystaff with which she can whack foes to get their magic. Use a wide variety of spells to help her unravel the mysteries of the Night of the Curious Moon!

Comments:

I'm not into platformers, but I decided to try something new for once. Here, you get to play as Tobari and whack your way to the goal. If you manage to whack mages, they drop spells which you can use to freeze or fireball enemies in your way. You complete stages and slowly move up to higher stages. There is also a shop which lets you purchase useful items to help you complete the goal.

This game was rather relaxing for me when I played it after a day of stress. I sucked terribly at this game at first (mostly because I'm so used to having the space bar as jump and the X button as cancel). I don't recall seeing a guide on the controls (unless I just missed it), so here they are before you accidentally kill yourself on your first try because of the controls:

Space = Pause
Attack = Z
Jump = X

Online Anime TCG Games! My Deck Can't Be This MOE!

Ok, so at some point I was bored and had the strangest urge to go play a Trading Card Game (TCG) online. (Cause real TCGs cost lots of money Dx) Anywho, I traversed the interwebs in search of the perfect game to cure my psychic emptiness.

My first stop was an old game I used to love: Sword Girls Online. But... to my dismay, the old site closed down. There's a new site, this time you're required to download the software. Before, you didn't have to. You'd just play it directly on the browser. I probably tried it out at a bad time cause their server was down, so they made the players use a backup server. The lag was terrible.

Anyway, game play wise, I find it pretty good because you can develop your own play style, combos, and you're required to actually have a good strategy to defeat dungeon bosses. It's challenging, just the way I like it. And to add to that, the art is just simply adorable! I wouldn't mind spending money on the real cards if I ever make a visit to Korea. ... if they still sell them that is.

Next up! I found Shikihime Garden. The art is pretty simple, but cute nonetheless. I love how you can decorate your garden and feed your himes. Early game, you don't need much strategy, just kill and lvl your himes. Mid game, you'd need to start balancing your team by putting enough of each type of hime. You'd also need to learn when to switch out a hime during battle.

What I don't like about this game is the grinding. If you want good cards, you need to grind, grind, and grind. I have no patience for grinding. Well, Sword Girls needs grinding too, but at least you're entertained with trying to come up with the next move and all.

This time, I went looking for games for android. I wanted to download Million Arthur, but nooo.. it's unavailable in my region, so I ended up with Ayakashi Ghost Guild.

If you're too lazy for lots of strategy and you just want to collect pretty cards, then perhaps you might like this game. Battle happens in just a second. Barely any strategy. You might argue that ayakashi have skills and all, but that barely helps unless you have moolah and went off to buy cards with super useful skills.

What I like about the game is the story. I must admit. I found it entertaining, especially for that one event with the carnival. Another thing I like is the art and music. I really love the music. When I first played the game, it was what caught my attention first. Those I mentioned are pretty much the only things that are keeping me playing occasionally. I mean, it's a game designed to make you buy stuff to increase power. Playing without buying makes the game way harder and often just discourages you from continuing. If you've been playing free browser games like those, you'd get what I'm talking about.

And so, after playing 3 games, I didn't want to play any more online TCGs. Some people recommended Hearthstone, which sorta reminds me of Magic: The Gathering, but I'll probably save that for later. Right now, I'm contemplating on trying out Weiss Schwarz and building a Madoka deck.

[Review] Yanderella

Title: Yanderella
Developer: CHARON (Nekofuji Kaoru)
Site: http://nekocharon.web.fc2.com/
Genre: Eroge-styled Horror Adventure

Summary:

Yatarou, the main character, is a handsome hikikomori.
One day, he has a reunion with his former best friends Honoka and Hinata.
However, a warped love triangle lurks behind the happy days the three of them spend together.

Comments:

I really expected this to be the usual RPGmaker horror game with chase scenes and puzzle solving, but it turned out to be something near a visual novel dating game with some killer yandere girls. Pretty refreshing I must say.

What caught my attention for this game was the paint-esque art. I still don't know how to magically manipulate paint to create two moe anime girls, so I've come to appreciate the art style of this game. I find it hilarious that Yatarou's face doesn't change all throughout.

As far as I know, there are 3 endings: one where you don't get killed, one where Hinata goes cray-cray, and one where Honoka goes cray-cray. You unlock these by choosing whether you give the bear to any of them or keep it to yourself.

Despite this being lighter than the usual horror, there are still a bunch of things that scare me in this game. One moment it's all normal and lovey dovey then-- BOOM. Yandere horror comes in like a jump scare. The last scenes in the game were the best. The music that plays is just perfect (For Honoka's ending, a very familiar song plays). I enjoyed it too much. I still can't decide which ending is better/the lesser evil, but I'd have to say Hinata's was more brutal.

What to expect:
- Lots of choices, hilarious ones
- Story/Dialogue-heavy because it's like a VN
- Zero chase scenes (Ok, maybe there is one but you don't have to control the character)
- Dramatic lovey dovey music
- Dramatic yandere music
- Ero scenes?! (Not really.)

...Yanderella.

The most difficult choice in the game.

[Review] Stray Cat Crossing Demo

Title: Stray Cat Crossing
Developer: Jurlo & Jetpackgone
Released: 2014
Console: PC (RPGmaker)
Version: 0.2
Genre: Puzzle, Horror, Adventure

Summary:

While searching for a stray cat, the protagonist finds herself trapped in a mysterious red room, unable to leave until she solves the puzzles and riddles of a babyfaced figure.

Comments:

This game has really interesting graphics and animations. That's what caught my attention throughout the game. I love how it's all weird and bizarre. The sprites and animations looked like they were painstakingly made. They even included short animated video clips in there, some of them are jump scares. That creepy saw-like baby face too is a pretty cool concept. I'm also seeing a bunch of original concepts which is refreshing (cause I play too many RPGmaker horror games and so many things are already getting old).

Considering it's still the demo, there isn't much plot to it yet. I'm hoping for a good plot to accompany the attractive graphics and nice music. I'd love to play more of this game.

Recommended for:

- People who love carnival-like themes
- Those who don't want any chase scenes (This demo didn't have any)
- Those who just want to do puzzle solving

Walkthrough over here!

Download here. And follow them on tumblr for updates on the game.

It's not the dead bird?

.... the fox say?! *gets shot*

[Review] Alyssa

Title: Alyssa
Developer: Berri
Released: 2014
Genre: Horror, Puzzle

Note: This is the original version. They're currently working on a revamped version of the game. See updates here.

Summary:

Alyssa is a girl who lives in a mansion with her parents and two servants, William and Eleana. On her birthday, she decides to go for a picnic with her parents but they cancel, so she heads to their room to convince them and finds a demon there.

Comments:

Honestly, I have several complaints about the game, but don't let this stop you from playing. Overall, it's still enjoyable. Anyway, the save point is in an annoying place, where there are 2 demons walking around. (Thank goodness they fixed this in the revamped version) You'd be forced to dash every time you try to save and also after you save, which is annoying.

After playing several RPGmaker horror games some things start to get old and nothing feels new anymore, so if you're like me, you may feel a bit bored with the game. The puzzles are nothing new. Some of them you might have already encountered in other games. What does make this game worth playing is its mystery. (Though at some point in the game the plot is already pretty predictable... until you get to the ending and you're like wtf) What really happened?

The art in the game is alright. Alyssa turned out to be an adorable looking loli. The customized tiles look pretty good too. William looks like a girl though. As for the music, I'm hearing some familiar tunes there. Fits the atmosphere fine.

That painting on the right is your save point and heal.
Oh, and look what's guarding it!

Yeah. Little girl can blow up trees!

Seriously, I was expecting William to suddenly stop his goody-two-shoes act and reveal himself to be the mastermind. I mean, he's the person you'd least suspect. Didn't happen so... The WilliamxAlyssa ship lives!! (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:・゚✧ But then in the end---*gets shot for almost saying spoilers*

[Review] Patty and Mr. Miles

Title: Patty and Mr. Miles
Genre: RPG, Comedy
Developer: BrownSugar
Console: PC
Playtime: 1-2 hours

Patty and Mr. Miles is a pretty short game with cutesy graphics and a town that reminds me of the Pokemon town maps. You can fish to earn money or increase your stats, and farm locos that you can use to heal yourself during battles (though really, it isn't necessary to even farm locos just to progress or win boss battles). There are also short side quests available when you talk to the other villagers.

Behind the cutesy exterior is a dark past waiting to be uncovered. Well, if you play the After Story that is. You can totally just stop at the main story and save yourself from the feels and all the weird stuff that happen in the after story. Sometimes, you're just better off not knowing.

I'd recommend this game to people who like the whole 'cute but violent' theme and who are into games with dark back stories. What I love about this game are the graphics and the comedy. I like how you can choose to either waste time by exploring and doing other things or head straight to the ending. I just wish they made the story lengthier and with more character development.

"We're not terrorists. Really."

Summary:

One day all the heads of the guys in the village got turned into animal heads including Miles'. They suspect that it's the wizard's doing so Miles and his girlfriend Patty head over to the Wizard's Tower to ask the wizard to reverse the so-called 'curse'. There, Miles discovers a secret about the wizard...

-After Story-

Miles and Patty become mayors, so they start having responsibilities like taking requests from the villagers. As they fulfill their duties, Miles begins to remember bits and pieces of his past. Then, things start falling apart...

Because the village needs one so badly!

Mini Guide:

You don't really need a walkthrough for this game, considering it's pretty straightforward, but here's some random info I managed to take down from playing. It's incomplete since most things available aren't necessary to even complete the game and I like saving time soo...

Sidequests:

1. Catch giant fish - John
- Just head to the second fishing lake and drop your line right in front of the sea dragon's face. Make sure the bait is right in front of its mouth.
- Go back and talk to John after

2. Convince Daryll not to move - Patricia
- Go to castle
- Talk to Jacob (merchant guy)
- Talk to John
- Bomb castle
- Reward: Veggie Box

3. Farming - Vince

Fishing:

I must admit. I am really terrible at fishing, but I managed to catch a bunch of fish that raised their stats high enough to easily KO bosses with a few moves. So, here are some fish and their corresponding stat increases:

Eel - HP
Sake - Defense
Ei - Special Attack
Beta - Attack

Badges:

??? badge - found in the tower (I forgot what the pic on the badge was, but this one you'll definitely encounter)
Ghost badge - found in the well
Snowman badge - found in the well

I love this couple. So cute!

[Review] フリーゲーム「bury」

Title: フリーゲーム「bury」
Genre: Horror, RPG
Developer: 4段目の猫 (4cat)
Playtime: 2-3 hours
Console: PC

Download

Bury is a game that has a lot of nursery rhyme references, so if you know your rhymes well, it will be an advantage for you in the game.

If you liked Ib or The Witch's House, you'll probably enjoy this game. It has similar puzzle solving stages where you meet strange characters like a cat with a fiddle, talking deer heads, and other talking inanimate objects. The game atmosphere and music really do remind me of Ib a lot. I love the music. It's very suitable for a riddle-solving exploration game.

As you progress through the game, the mystery behind the mansion deepens and you'll probably end up making theories as some stuff starts to become quite complicated.

Summary:

Coco loses her most treasured notebook.

"Perhaps it's in that place..."

"But that place is somewhere I definitely shouldn't go to, right?"

Relying on those words, Coco goes off to look for her notebook.

You play as this girl named Coco who goes inside a mansion to look for her missing notebook. When she steps inside, she sees a shadow and follows it. As she searches for the shadow, she starts to meet strange characters who ask her to solve riddles. Soon, she encounters a little boy and an older man who join her in her quest for her notebook. Could these two be a key to solving the mystery behind the strange mansion?

After playing several games like these,
it's not surprising anymore that inanimate objects are talking.

I've learned from every other RPGmaker game I've played
that red lips are dangerous. This one is no exception.

"Oh hey there, stranger! Let's go on an adventure together!
....Just don't suddenly stab me in the back."

[Review] Rune Factory 4

Developer: Neverland Co.
Genre: RPG
Released: Oct 2013 (English)
Platform: Nintendo 3DS

I finally got around to playing the game. Yay. Ahh~ So much nostalgia.

Like in nearly every Rune Factory game, the main character, Frey, gets amnesia again and falls out of an airship after being ambushed, then lands on the dragon Ventuswill. The people assume she's a princess, until Arthur comes along. Arthur, the Prince of Norad, leaves his duties to her so Frey ends up having princess responsibilities.

Soon, strange things start happening so you explore dungeons, and defeat the boss there to get a new bachelor/bachelorette to add to your harem. I won't spoil so much because I want you to feel the feels when that certain scene happens while you're playing the game. I swear this game had the most feels out of all the Rune Factory games.

New things I noticed:

The most obvious new thing there is the extra responsibility you have as a princess. So, you need to earn princess points to draw in tourists and develop the place. Thanks to that, this game has a lot of goals you can slowly fulfill, so it's hard to run out of things to do. You also need a licence before you can purchase cooking ware, a forge, and a crafting table.

They added in a new shop feature where you can sell your items at a stall. So you talk to customers and try to convince them to buy your product. Customers tend to pay higher than the item's shipping price.

The battle animations and stuff look a bit cooler now compared to Rune Factory 1, 2, and 3. It totally motivated me to go kill more ants and woolies and other weak things (bully mode). There's also the 'gloves' as a weapon that lets you beat things up with your fists.

There are also more skills this time?! Were the skills this many before?! And it's recommended that you eat everyday so you'll grow stronger. I quote Volkanon: "YOU... MUST... EAT! Repeat after me!"

The choices are more hilarious too. Ex. "Bow down before me, peasants!"

DOWN WITH MY IDENTITY.

Oh, and you can also confess to random people in town... except for a few people like Volkanon. (I wish I could have Volkanon in my party though. That guy's strength is insane!)

One last thing, there's more SPACE! *tears of joy* (。┰ω┰。) I had problems with having too many times in Rune Factory 3, now I have like... so much space! I don't care if I have to chop wood and crush rocks to get it!

Thoughts on characters:

Ventuswill

Ventuswill is the native dragon that lives alongside the people of Selpha. She just sits around all day in the palace.

I really like her personality. One moment she's all stiff and formal, then later she acts like a best friend you've known for a long time. lol I've grown attached to her through the game... ˚‧º·(˚ ˃̣̣̥᷄⌓˂̣̣̥᷅ )‧º·˚

Vishnal

Doesn't he look like Hayate the combat butler to you? I mean... butler + blue hair. Yeah. It's so adorable how he's always trying his best to become the ultimate butler. I like the expression he has with the fire in his eyes. He's always going "I'll do my best to win at this festival!" And so far... he hasn't won a single one. lol Poor Vishnal.

Vishnal, I will train you to become a combat butler!

Arthur

Personally, I like meganekkos so Arthur's appearance totally appeals to me. He has an air of mystery and nobility around him (well, he's a prince so... yeah). He's also a workaholic. Every time I ask him to join me in an adventure, he declines cause he's busy. ╭(๑¯д¯๑)╮

What's bothering me is that he sometimes spouts out lines related to enjoying pain. Could it be he's a...?!

I'm so tempted to give him cat ears so he'll wear them all day. LOL

What about the ones on your face?!

Doug

He's like a more active Gaius. I ship him with Dylas...!!

Kiel

He's a shota who reads books. For some reason, the fortune teller person said our compatibility level is uber high.

Margaret

Her appearance reminds me of Daria, but her personality is definitely not similar cause Daria isn't as afraid of so many things as Margaret is.

I ran out of space to put all my cooking and crafting tables in my room, so I just placed half of them in her house cause it's spacey. Ahahaha... So Maragaret's house became a sort of extension of my house. Well, she's not complaining~

Xiao Pai

For some reason, she reaally reminds me of Colette from Rune Factory 3. That build! That affinity for food!

Clorica

Reminds me of Karina from RF3 and my real life friend Toru. In fact, any lazy girl I encounter in anime, manga or games reminds me of Toru.

Clorica has the sleeping ability that can rival Nanaki-sensei from Hatoful Kareshi. She can also cook delicious food while sleeping?! What madness is this?!

Forte

She looks like Saber!! And her personality reminds me of Kuruna from RF3!

She really really looks like Saber.

Amber

This girl is so tiny! And cheerful! Take all my apple juice, Amber! (∩˃o˂∩)♡

Doug once said that if the world was full of Amber, then there would be no war cause they'd just chill out and drink juice. lol

Dolce

Another tsundere! This game is like... tsundere heaven! Ahh.. Dolce is so adorable!

Pico

She's the ghost who haunts Dolce. Pico is like... the most awesomest ghost friend ever. She even wrote this outside the inn:

You don't want to know what anime her name reminds me of. Seriously. To those who can relate,... uh... yeah... I should just shut up.

Jones

Why is he taken?! lol I blame Atelier Elkrone for making me like older meganekko guys who are doctors or alchemists. No, wait. Now that I think about it. He looks kinda like Clemens sensei. Nuoo!

Clemens sensei, is that you?! ((((;゜Д゜)))

Nancy

OMG. I tried confessing to her once and she actually said she would have considered me if she hadn't married Jones. LOL

Badass Nurse Nancy.

Lin Fa

She's so pretty. Why isn't she date-able? Then again, I'm playing as a girl. lol

Lin Fa's character reminds me a bit of Shino (Sakuya's mom from RF3), except Lin Fa is really clumsy yet has enormous luck that her mistakes turn out well.

Volkanon

This guy is amazingly strong. I mean, how'd he break all those gargantuan stumps by just running through them?! And how did he jump to the other cliff and build a bridge in mere seconds?! #game logic

BUILDING BRIDGES IS EASIER THAN PUTTING ON PANTS?! REALLY?!

Bado

I swear. All this guy cares about is money. And, he's even lazier than Clorica if you take him in your party. He's like... level 35 but he NEVER attacks. Like... EVER. If you try confessing to this guy, all he talks about is money! (╯°Д°)╯︵/(.□ . \)

Illuminata

Tea-loving detective who points at people and go "You're the criminal!"

Other Comments:

This game requires you to go chop wood and break stones more than any Rune Factory game. If you want to progress faster in the game, you have to go chop wood or break stones. >_<

Another annoying thing is that each cooking utensil has its own table. What?! They take up so much space! But then you can like... exploit others' houses. Mehehe...
